Summer Workouts 2020

Dear Parent and Student Athletes,

We are excited that we are now ready to officially begin our new strength and conditioning program. Along with the announcement that the state of Louisiana will be moving into Phase II, we have received permission from the Diocese to host summer activities and workouts on campus within specific parameters. This email will detail important information and procedures that will be followed each day to ensure the safety of our athletes during summer workouts. The plans that are in place will follow current NFHS, CDC, and LHSAA guidelines and restrictions for the safety of our athletes from start to finish. As these plans change, ours will be adapted accordingly. The health and safety of our students is our top priority.

*** Deadline to register is Sunday, June 7, at noon.  Workouts start on Monday, June 8.  All student athletes must be registered at https://geauxbigred.com. All questions should be directed to Coach Scott Wattigny at swattigny@chspanthers.com.  Athletes will be required to register and provide all specified information before attending.

In preparation

  1. Expiration of current annual physicals have been deferred for the summer months.  More details to be determined. (All new athletes must have a physical on file to participate in summer workouts.)
  2. All students must complete the initial health screening (attached) that was included in the registration information.
    1. Copies will also be available at drop-off.
  3. Any student who feels ill or cannot answer No to all health screening questions should not attend workouts.
  4. All students should bring their own water bottles.  Water fountains will not be available.

Hydration – Athletes must bring their own water bottle (no sharing) and bottles should be labeled with that athlete’s name.  There will not be access to any water fountains. It is recommended that athletes bring at least 32 oz of water to last the duration of their workout.

  1. Masks – Every athlete should wear a mask as they make their way to their designated workout areas.  They will not have to wear their mask during the workout.  Where social distancing may be limited going from station to station, the athlete may be asked to wear their mask.

During Workouts

Athletes will remain in daily pods (small groups) each day and throughout the summer to limit the interaction with others. In the event an athlete has symptoms or is infected, we will only have to send that athlete’s pod home for the required quarantine period. Athletes in other pods will be allowed to continue to train. Pods will consist of 5-10 people.

The weight room will have markings to ensure six feet of social distancing. Doors will be kept open for adequate airflow, removing particles, and contactless entry.

The practice field will be lined in 5 yards increments, with markings to designate 6 feet of social distance.

We are limiting the number of weights athletes will share throughout the workout. Generally speaking, each athlete will have only one set of weights they can touch throughout the training session. This will allow us to work more efficiently without having to stop to sanitize every time a new athlete touches a weight. We will disinfect all the surfaces an athlete touches before another athlete uses them.

After Workouts

Coach Biz Thomason, our Athletic Trainer, and our Athletic Training Student Aides will be available to assess and treat any injuries that may occur during workouts on campus.  They will also be coordinating and assisting with all sanitizing and cleaning that must be done between workout groups.  Please feel free to reach out regarding any limitations/questions/concerns as we get ready for the return to working out.

Departure

Follow the same protocol as pick up.  Remember to keep six feet of social distancing when returning to vehicles to leave.
