2019 Summer Reading Lists

We at Catholic High are committed to providing our students with academic excellence. We believe that reading is a fundamental skill, and we continually seek ways to improve our reading program and encourage lifelong learning and reading. Research confirms that if a student is engaged in learning throughout the summer, there is a positive effect when he/she returns to school in the fall. Therefore, the English department at Catholic High feels that summer reading is beneficial for our students. We certainly encourage students to pursue their own interests in books of their choice during the summer; however, we also assign carefully selected titles that blend into the curriculum of each level.

Grades 5-8

Students at all levels must read the following books during the summer:

Be sure to note the date of the movie to watch. Students will be tested on their reading of the book and their viewing of the movie during the first week back in August.

Among other reading focuses, students should look for:

  • Typical structural elements of the novel (i.e. plot, characters, setting, themes, structure, etc.)
  • New words
  • Connections to the historical period of the author and/or the setting
  • What makes the novel a classic
